Our five senses provide information about the world around us. They make us enjoy various things- the taste of food, the sound of music, the beauty of a sunny day, the fragrance of a flower, etc.
Sense of Sight
We see with our eyes. Sight or vision is the ability of the eyes to focus and detect images of varying colors and brightness.
Blind People
People who cannot see are called visually challenged people or blind people. Such people have a very well developed sense of touch and smell. Their sense of touch is very helpful to them. Blind people read and write with the ….sense of touch. This special system consists of codes in which raised dots represent the alphabets. This system of raised dots is known as Braille Script. It was developed by Louis Braille in 1824.
Disabled people can perform very well if they get good guidance and support. Helen Keller was both blind and deaf. However, she became a famous author as well as a famous teacher.
Sense of Hearing
We hear with our ears. Hearing is the sense of sound sensitivity. It is also known as auditory sense. The inability to hear is called deafness. Loud sounds are harmful to our ears.
Sense of Taste
Tongue is an important organ of our body. Tongue not only helps us to taste the food we eat, but also helps us to speak. It performs these two important functions.
There are at least four types of taste buds or receptors on the tongue. These receptors convey information to the brain. The four important receptors on the tongue are sweet, salty, sour and bitter.
Sense of Smell
We smell things through nose or olfactory sense. There are hundreds of smell receptors in the nose. The receptors are responsible for different kinds of smell.
Sense of Touch
The four senses- sight, hearing, smell and taste are located in specific parts of the body. But, the sense of touch is spread all over the body. This is because the sense of touch originates in the bottom layer of our skin, called the dermis, and we have skin all over our body. The dermis is filled with many tiny nerve endings which give information about the feel of various things. It helps us to feel cold, hot, pain, pressure, etc.
Good Touch – Bad Touch
People touch in different ways. When your father pats you on your back for winning a trophy it is a good touch. When your mother slaps you for your mistake, it is a bad touch. When a touch makes you feel warm, comfortable and happy, it is a good touch.
On the other hand, when a touch makes you feel uncomfortable, afraid and unsafe, it is a bad touch. When children think that some people always touch them in a bad way, they should seek the advice of their parents or elders.
